I have been so busy since my last post! Inspiration struck for a new design/series and I have been drawing and coloring as well as stitching, stitching stitching!

I love when a design takes shape so quickly in my head and comes to life almost effortlessly! I’m not sure where the inspiration came from for this table mat, my first sketches were back in October, but it really did come together quickly and easily.
I used a beautiful hand-dyed wool from the Wooly Lady that I just love! I chose to open the middle of the table mat so you can see more of this gorgeous wool! Rather than use interfacing behind the embroidery I chose to use the wool as the entire base layer. It gives the mat just the right stability and drape at the same time.

The mittens are colored with colored pencils, then hand embroidered. Coloring is such a relaxing activity for me. I enjoy adding shading and blending the colors. It’s fun to see the colors blend and change the more I work with them. The embroidery is done with simple stem and straight stitches and a few French knots. I added wool cuffs to the mittens from the extra wool I had after I cut out the mat.

The mat finishes at approximately 16″ in diameter. I dyed the raw wooden buttons to get just the right color to match the pencils and floss. It was such fun to dye the buttons! It was like an adventure, not knowing exactly what the outcome would be!
I taught this class to a group of women who helped me fine-tune the pattern. The pattern is now available in my shop. It is filled with pictures to explain every step and the hand-dyed buttons are included!
Thanks for stopping in today!
Blessings,
Michelle
